Geotechnical advice and design
We design and check in consequence classes 1–3 and support every phase – from concept and zoning to detailed design and construction – across collaborative, design-build and construct-only contracts.
Geotechnical design
Typical assignments include foundation concepts, feasibility and stability, as well as development appraisal, underpinning, construction phase and settlement damage.
Foundations
- Shallow and piled foundations
- Bearing capacity and settlements
- Underpinning
- Due diligence
Excavations and support
- Excavations and deep pits
- Retaining structures and earth pressure
- Trenches and bore pits
- Ground improvement and stabilisation
Terrain and stability
- Slope stability
- Fills and embankments
- Landslides and quick clay
Project types
- Residential and commercial buildings
- Road and rail
- Water, sewerage and infrastructure
- Bridges
- BREEAM and FutureBuilt
Area stability and quick clay
Zoning, permits, construction and earthworks all require documented safe building ground. Below the marine limit this includes demonstrating adequate safety against quick clay landslides.
We assess area stability, evaluate and register hazard zones, and design works in areas with brittle (sensitive) clays. You can also contact us after slides in soil – or if you are concerned one may occur.
Regulations
- pbl § 28-1
- Planning and Building Act – safe building ground
- TEK17 kap. 7
- Building regulations – safety against natural hazards
- NVE 1/2019
- Guideline “Safety against quick clay landslides”
When do you need this?
- Zoning or permits below the marine limit
- Works near mapped quick clay zones
- Earthworks, fills and mass relocation
- After slides or signs of movement
Independent control
With central approval in consequence class 3, we perform independent control of design and execution under the Planning and Building Act, SAK10 and Norwegian/European standards – and third-party QA of area stability to the NVE guideline.
- Design – geotechnical engineering, consequence class 3
- Independent control – geotechnical engineering, consequence class 3
Design
The designer develops the solutions – calculations, drawings and specifications – and is responsible for meeting the requirements.
Independent control
An independent firm checks that the design or execution complies with regulations and assumptions, catching errors before they have consequences.
Ground investigations
We assess the need for ground investigation at every phase, and plan, follow up and report the work. Trial pits and field and laboratory testing are carried out by our partner firms.
Geoteknia does not operate drill rigs or a laboratory – we direct the investigation and interpret the results.
Construction follow-up
- Unforeseen ground conditions
- Stability challenges
- Questions on designed solutions
- Monitoring programmes
- Design assumptions and neighbouring structures

Through partners in environmental and engineering geology we can offer complementary services, keeping the geosciences joined up across the project.
